September 1, 1963 ~ September 4, 2017
Valerie Buffo Tanner, returned to the loving arms of her dad, Guido, on September 4, 2017. Valerie was born in Provo, Utah, on September 1, 1963, to Guido and Joanne Buffo. Valerie's childhood was filled with adventure, love, and of course laughter. Valerie grew up in both Provo, and Springville, before meeting her first love, Fred Tanner.
Valerie and Fred were married in Springville, Utah, on July 10, 1981, before being moved to California, where Fred served in the Navy. While in California, Valerie gave birth to her son, Zachary. Fred and Valerie then enlisted in the Air Force where they were stationed at Nellis A.F.B., Nevada, and where Valerie gave birth to her daughter, Ashley. While in Nevada, Valerie received her Medical Assistant certificate and began her career of helping others. Valerie and her family were then stationed at Elmendorf A.F.B., Alaska, where she fell in love with the great outdoors and where her obsession with bears grew. Missing their family over the years, Valerie and her family were luckily stationed back in Utah. Being a military wife led Valerie to a life of traveling, where she impacted lives all over the country and made countless adoring friends. Valerie and Fred were divorced in 2005, which began another life of journeys and travel for her.
Valerie had many jobs in Northern Utah, doing what she loved, being involved in the medical field and helping others. Her final job was working as a Medical Assistant at Intermountain Salt Lake Clinic. She loved her job, and spoke of her work family often. Valerie's life became complete when her grandbabies were brought into her life starting in 2011.
Valerie is the epitome of what a grandmother should be. While other people have hobbies in life, Valerie's hobby was spending time with her children and grandbabies, and spoiling them rotten. Valerie was given unforgettable names by her grandbabies to include, grandma black hair and grandma moose. Valerie met her love, Shawn Whetsel, in 2014, and were engaged to be married next year. Shawn had an amazing impact on Valerie, and the love they shared was fierce.
Valerie is preceded in death by her father, Guido Buffo. Valerie is survived by her mother, Joann Paulsen Buffo; sisters: Annette (Scott) Anderson, Joni (Brian) Nielson, Lisa Davis; brothers: Steve (Loni) Buffo, and John (Debra) Buffo; children; Zachary (Samantha) Tanner, and Ashley (Randy) Funk; and grandbabies: Brinley and Tanner Funk and Ricki and Sterling Tanner.
We love you forever and always, no matter what mom!
A celebration of Valerie's life will be held at 2 p.m., Saturday, September 16, 2017, at the Berg Drawing Room Chapel, 185 E. Center Street, Provo, Utah, 84606. The family also asks if anyone has any special photos or items that remind you of Valerie to bring them to the service.
